Content editing (also called Developmental or Substantive Editing)

With this type of editing, I am looking at plot, characterization, story arc, continuity, pacing, and writing technique. This is the big picture edit looking for developmental issues in the manuscript. I will provide feedback within the manuscript via MS Word’s Track Changes. Additionally, my Editing Report will furnish detailed explanations along with the strengths and weaknesses of the novel.

Copy Editing (also called Line Editing)

This editing will look at elements such as scene structure, character development, POV, dialogue, writing tics, continuity, and wordiness or confusing sentences. Consider this a small picture edit to identify issues not rewrite major sections of the novel. I will make comments and corrections in MS Track Changes for your review. The Editing Report will contained detailed explanations and an overall review of the major elements of the novel’s strengths and weaknesses.

Proofreading (also called Copy Editing)

This is the final step of editing to provide a clean manuscript for publishing. This review looks for spelling, grammar, punctuation, clarity, continuity, flow, factual accuracy, formatting and any possibly copyright or trademark infringements. Corrections will be made in MS Track Changes for your approval or rejection.

What can I expect?

I believe that the editing process is a coaching relationship. Through comments and highlighting areas to review, the author can learn and recognize patterns in their writing. For example if I find “tics” or repetitive words, I will highlight them throughout the manuscript for you to decide how to address the problem. This will strengthen your writing for future novels.

For a thorough edit, I will read your manuscript three complete times. I rely on the Chicago Manual of Style 16th Edition and the Merriam-Webster Dictionary 11th Edition for corrections.

Turnaround times are dependent on my current workload, however, most manuscripts are returned within 10 – 14 days. The actual date will be specified in our written contract outlining the expectations and services provided.
